Labour’s spending was inefficient and wasteful, meaning most of the cuts are efficiency savings

Labour had already committed to £35bn total savings three years before losing office, of which more than £20bn had been achieved by the election.

The so-called “efficiency savings” set out by the Coalition government include cancelling major policies and priority spending such as the Future Jobs Fund helping unemployed people get back into work, and cutting school rebuilding projects. Even bodies set up to help save money – such as the Audit Commission which makes sure local councils and NHS services provide value for money – are being axed.
